Aurora1 is a proprietary AV1 encoder from Visionular, a video-encoding company founded in 2018. Its output is standard AV1, playable by any AV1 decoder.

  • SDKs for x86 and ARM servers and for mobile, for on-premises or private-cloud deployment.
  • AuroraCloud, a managed transcoding service for live, VOD and real-time communication (RTC), which is also the route to a free trial.
  • Use cases across VOD, live and sports streaming, video conferencing and screen content, with real-time presets for low-delay encoding and content-adaptive tools for film grain and screen content.

Visionular claims 30–50% lower bitrates than open-source AV1 encoders, encoding “several times” faster than other AV1 encoders, and lower CPU use for real-time encoding. It also says Aurora1 has won the MSU codec comparison several times. The product page gives no versions, settings or test conditions for these figures, and no public documentation or option reference exists for the SDK.

For open-source AV1 encoding, use SVT-AV1 or aomenc. If you evaluate Aurora1, compare it with those at several bitrates on your own content, following the quality-comparison guide.
